Get a Free InspectionWhen Bloomington renters call about cockroaches, it's almost always the same species: the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). Smaller and faster than the American cockroach you might see outside, German roaches are built for indoor survival. They thrive behind refrigerators, inside cabinet wall voids, and under dishwashers — and they reproduce fast enough that a minor problem becomes a full infestation within weeks.
Seeing one roach in your kitchen during the day is a warning sign. German roaches are nocturnal. Daytime sightings mean the population is large enough that competition for harborage is pushing them into the open.
German cockroach pressure is highest in Bloomington's older apartment stock — particularly buildings along the Kirkwood corridor, the East 3rd, Atwater, and East 10th corridors near campus, and older rental housing in Elm Heights, Near West Side, and Prospect Hill. These buildings have shared plumbing walls, older grout and caulking, and decades of small gaps around pipe penetrations that give roaches a direct highway between units. A single infested unit can seed an entire floor within one to two months.
Shared laundry rooms and dumpster enclosures are two other common introduction points. Cardboard boxes carry cockroach egg cases — those cases get carried upstairs by tenants who don't realize what they're bringing in.

Consumer aerosol sprays are repellent products, not eliminating ones. When you spray along baseboards, roaches scatter deeper into wall voids, behind appliances, and into adjacent units. The visible roaches die. The colony — the 80% or more that never came out — survives and rebuilds.
German cockroaches have also developed significant resistance to pyrethroids, the active ingredient in most consumer sprays. A product that killed roaches twenty years ago may have little effect on today's urban populations.
