Used Furniture and Bed Bugs in Bloomington — What Every Student and Renter Needs to Know

Every August in Bloomington, the same scenario plays out hundreds of times across the neighborhoods surrounding Indiana University. A student moving into a new apartment spots a free couch on Craigslist or picks up a bookshelf left on a curb near the B-Line Trail. They carry it up the stairs, push it against the wall, and think nothing of it. Six weeks later, they have bed bugs — and they have no idea where the infestation came from.

It came from the furniture. Secondhand and curbside furniture is the origin story we hear more than any other — not travel, not neighbors. Furniture acquired for free or cheap near IU campus during the August move-in season, when turnover in student housing is so high that items from infested apartments end up on curbs within days.

Why Bloomington Has a Secondhand Furniture Problem

The economics of student housing near IU make secondhand furniture nearly irresistible. Rent in the campus corridor is high relative to student budgets, so furnishing cheaply matters. At the same time, the August move-out creates a massive supply of discarded furniture — students leaving for the summer or graduating and abandoning items they don't want to move. Couches, mattresses, bed frames, dressers, and upholstered chairs appear on curbs throughout the IU-adjacent neighborhoods every May and August in quantities remarkable for any Indiana city.

The problem: some of that furniture is being discarded specifically because the tenant discovered a bed bug infestation and decided discarding it was easier than treating it. The furniture itself is still infested. Bed bugs can survive six to twelve months without a human host in cool conditions — a couch set on the curb in early August still has a viable infestation when someone loads it into their car three hours later.

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist add another layer. A tenant with bed bugs doesn't necessarily know it when they list furniture for free pickup. Bed bugs concentrate in sleeping areas, and early-stage infestations in a living room couch may be completely invisible to the person sitting on it for months.

What Furniture Poses the Most Risk

Not all secondhand furniture carries equal bed bug risk. The risk depends on how much contact the item has with sleeping or resting humans, how many hiding places it has, and how easy it is to inspect thoroughly.

How to Inspect Used Furniture for Bed Bugs Before Bringing It Inside

The most important rule: inspect outside your apartment, not inside. Once furniture is inside your unit, any bed bugs present have access to your living space. Inspect in a parking lot, on a porch, or in a garage.

What you're looking for:

• Live bed bugs: Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed — flat, oval, reddish-brown. Nymphs are smaller and translucent to light yellow. They move quickly when disturbed.
• Fecal staining: Small dark reddish-brown or black spots, often clustered, that look like someone pressed an ink pen to the fabric. These spots smear slightly when wet — a useful test if you're unsure.
• Shed skins: Hollow translucent shells shaped like the live insect, the size of a sesame seed to a small lentil. A cluster of shed skins indicates an established harborage nearby.
• Egg cases: Small white or translucent capsules about 1mm long, often glued to fabric fibers or wood grain. Very difficult to see without a flashlight at close range.

Equipment to bring: a flashlight, a credit card to probe into seams, and a magnifying app on your phone. For an upholstered couch, the most important step is flipping it and pulling back the black cambric fabric on the bottom — bed bugs concentrate here because it's dark, close to humans, and rarely disturbed. If the couch is infested, you'll often find fecal staining or live bugs here first.

If any of these inspections reveal signs of bed bugs — stop. Don't bring the piece inside. The cost of treating a bed bug infestation ($250–$1,500 depending on severity) will far exceed what you saved on the free couch.

The Curb Mattress Problem

A mattress on a Bloomington curb — especially in the IU-adjacent neighborhoods between August 1 and 15 — should be assumed infested until proven otherwise. There is no reliable way to inspect a mattress quickly enough in the street to be confident it's clean.
